Crinan Alexander (Chairman)

Crinan AlexanderCrinan was the first Research Associate on the European Garden Flora (EGF) project from 1979 until 1986, when he joined the staff of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE). He continued to be involved in the EGF until the project was completed with the publication of Volume 6 in 2000. He has attended all four International Symposia on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants, being main organiser and proceedings editor of the Third Symposium held in Edinburgh in 1998. In the early 1990s he was involved in setting up an MSc course in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants run jointly by RBGE and The University of Edinburgh, and was co-director of the course until 1996. He has co-authored accounts of Ribes and Rosaceae subfamily Spiraeoideae for the Flora of China and was Senior Editor of the Edinburgh Journal of Botany from 2001 to 2006.

Though technically retired he is now preparing contributions for the Flora of Nepal project and continues to teach on the MSc course and serve on the RHS Advisory Panel on Nomenclature and Taxonomy. Away from taxonomy, he has been involved in leading botanical tours to the eastern Mediterranean, Georgia and Bhutan, and is part of an ambitious project to restore native woodland to a 600-hectare valley in the southern uplands of Scotland.

He was one of the founder members of HORTAX and became Chairman in 1998.
