Diana Miller

Diana MillerOne of the founder members of HORTAX, Diana was Secretary of the Group from its creation in 1988 until autumn 2005, when she retired as the first Keeper of the rapidly expanding Horticultural Herbarium of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley.

During the past 25 years she has developed the RHS Herbarium and created techniques to preserve the important features of cultivars. She has promoted the concept of Standard Specimens for new cultivars, which is now formally included in the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (1995). Standards are now actively being prepared and the results can be found on the RHS Web site. Her specialities include Pelargonium species, on which she has written a book, Plectranthus and Lavatera. As a horticultural taxonomist, Diana is author or contributor of a number of papers and books concerned with cultivated plants, editor of the Abstracts volume for the Third International Symposium on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants (1999, 2004) and one of the editors of the European Garden Flora. She was Secretary to the RHS Hardy Woody Ornamental Plant (Floral B) Committee for over 20 years. For many years she represented the RHS on the NCCPG Plant Conservation Committee and co-ordinated the RHS National Plant Collections. She is now able to devote more time to writing about cultivated plants and continuing her work with Plectranthus and other genera of garden interest.
