Adrian Whiteley

Adrian WhiteleyCurrently resting from paid employment, Adrian was, until April 2002, Senior Botanist at the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden, Wisley, where he was responsible for running a plant identification service for the Society's members and gardens. In addition to this extremely interesting, if sometimes frustrating occupation, he was one of the editors of The RHS Plant Finder, an annual nursery guide listing over 70,000 plant names which aims to be as correct as possible and thus used as a nomenclatural standard. He was also involved with the Society's plant committees, which gather together groups of people with an unrivalled knowledge of cultivated plants.

Adrian is a member of the RHS Advisory Panel on Nomenclature and Taxonomy and has been the Society's representative on co-operative bodies dealing with toxic plants. A working life filled with plant variety left no time for specialisation, but if pressed he will admit to a soft spot (but no taxonomic expertise!) for ferns and tropical plants, particularly palms.

This profile was updated 14 March 2008.
